Croydon Council have advised that an investigation into the Council properties has begun, in light of the recent ITV News showing on Monday 22nd March 2021.
The disrepair located in the South Norwood properties situated in under the Croydon Council umbrella included:
Persistent leaks
Flooding within properties
Mould and Damp
Lavatories not in use
Pleas from tenants has been ignored
Shocking footage leads to complaints
The concerning footage shown led to raise serious questions on how people could be allowed to live in such conditions in the 21st Century.
Lockdown nightmares
ITV spoke to residents of Regina Road who all lived in the block of flats located here. One tenant stated “she has reported about 10 leaks in the five years she has lived there. Recently she says she was left without a toilet for four nights. Her seven-year-old son has bowel problems and the pair were isolating before a planned operation at the time.”
Inhabitable property
Another tenant stated that his kitchen was so mould ridden due to a persistent leak, that the family had to relocate into another room due to the severity of the disrepair making it inhabitable. Here at Evans Hughes we are aware that mould and damp can cause health implications and must be rectified as soon as possible to prevent more health and structural damage from occurring. This was confirmed by a third tenant who expressed that her daughter’s asthma was worsened by the mould and damp present in the property, which has spread considerably.
Appalling conditions
Councillor Cummings said “words can’t describe” how she felt when she learnt of the appalling conditions on Friday. She added: “Every one of us has to take responsibility, we need an investigation as to what happened. “I want to find out whether it is a problem across the borough. We want to find out how it got to that stage.”
As the council faces a serious financial crisis, having to declare bankruptcy in November, there will be questions whether the situation in South Norwood was exacerbated by a freeze on non-essential spending.

Pension transfers are a big decision and transferring out of a final salary scheme is rarely good advice. However, many people were advised to do that due to negligent financial advice. Evans Hughes are financial mis-selling experts and specialise in helping clients claim compensation when they have been given negligent financial advice to transfer their pensions.
It has been estimated that around 50% of UK businesses use an energy broker to find them a competitive deal on their business energy. Unfortunately, an industry-wide problem is coming to light which shows that many companies have been mis-sold gas and electricity. Third parties are charging commissions that are not made explicitly clear from the outset, resulting in much higher energy charges.
Push payment fraud is a very serious crime, and the victims can suffer financial loss and distress as well as loss of privacy. In many push payment scams, banks are reluctant to compensate. So, people can be left not knowing where to turn.
