Japanese Knotweed sprints out of hibernation

With the weather finally improving in the UK this spring residents are checking their gardens for the rapid rise of Japanese Knotweed. The invasive plant is spreading at a rapid rate in many areas and this can affect your property value.

Japanese Knotweed out of control?

Gardeners in the UK beware! The plant can reach up to three metres in height by mid-summer. They appear as purple or red asparagus-like shoots and quickly growing into lush green shrubs. They then grow heart or shovel-shaped leaves and pink-flecked stems. What could look like a pretty plant growing rapidly across your garden could actually be costing you money.

Destructive growth hits property prices

From driving up through small cracks in concrete, driveways, patios, paths, drains and even the cavity walls of homes, Japanese knotweed can make a property difficult to sell, unless a professional treatment plan is in place with an insurance-backed guarantee to satisfy mortgage lenders. According to research, approximately five per cent of homes are currently affected by the plant, either directly or indirectly, knocking around £20 billion off UK house prices. An expert lender has explained the seven meter rule. Essentially if the knotweed is seven meters or more away from the property, lenders do not have an issue with this. Problems arise when it spreads so fast and there is not proper treatment plan in place.
